There are several adapters included with Cumulus that allow you to access a catalog and choose an image from it to import or open it from another application. Adapters are provided for Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXPress, Aldus PageMaker, FrameMaker 4, FrameBuilder 4, Adobe Illustrator and RagTime. Canto and other software developers are working on additional adapters.
The Cumulus XTension runs with QuarkXPress 3.1 or later. This adapter is used to import an image file into a QuarkXPress document using a Cumulus database.
Installation
1. Copy the file “Cumulus XTension” into the folder that contains your QuarkXPress application.
2. Start QuarkXPress.
3. If the adapter is installed correctly you will see a menu item called “Cumulus…” in the “Utilities” menu.
How to Use
1. Choose “Cumulus…” from the “Utilities” menu.
The adapter first looks for a running version of Cumulus or Cumulus Client. If none of them is running it searches all mounted volumes for Cumulus or Cumulus Client and launches the first found. Cumulus or Cumulus Client is brought to the front. If no catalog is open, Cumulus prompts you to open or share a catalog. After that Cumulus shows one of these dialogs:
2. Select a record and click the OK button.
3. The corresponding image file will be imported into an image frame in QuarkXPress.
This adapter supports Helios EtherShare OPI 1.0 to 1.2: Before importing the chosen image file the XTension looks for the corresponding layout file. If such a file exists this layout file is imported instead of the original file.
Holding down the shift key while the image is placed (either by the menu command or by drag & drop) increases the resolution of the screen representation for the QuarkXPress document. Holding down the command key decreases the pixel depth of the screen representation for TIFF files. This functionality is identical to the way QuarkXPress handles these keys while placing an image by using the "Get Picture" menu command.
Dragging Images to QuarkXPress using the QuarkXPress Adapter
The QuarkXPress Adapter for Cumulus supports Drag And Drop to place images into a QuarkXPress document. To do so you need to install the Macintosh Drag And Drop system extension. After restarting your computer you can drag images from a Cumulus database directly into a QuarkXPress document:
1. Start QuarkXPress and open the document.
2. Start Cumulus and open the database which contains the image file to be placed.
3. Select the images you want to place by holding down the command key when clicking on the records in the catalog.
4. Click on one of the records and drag them to the QuarkXPress document window. The document window should show a frame to indicate that you can drop anything to it.
5. Release the mouse button. The QuarkXPress adapter creates a new image box for each image file to be placed starting at the point where you released the mouse button.
You can also drag an image file directly into an existing image box to replace the image that is already in there. Please select the image box before you drag you image from Cumulus and make sure that the box will not be covered when Cumulus is brought to front.
